Ten years ago Perry Kellogg came to Y staff with an idea to engage the Watch Hill market more passionately with the Y and its mission. She proposed hosting a fundraising event at the Kellogg summer home, the Rockpile, in March 2008 with a St. Patrick’s Day theme. She recruited several of her close friends to help organize a very successful (and very green) party.
The next spring, pink was introduced as a way to really spruce up the décor, theme and event. Pink & Green was born and from that point on it has grown year over year. When Charley joined the Westerly-Pawcatuck Board of Managers in 2011, Perry handed some more responsibility off to Charley. Over the next few years, the committee transitioned from Perry and her friends to Charley and his friends. Don’t be mistaken, Perry was always very involved and influential in the events’ success, even if quietly. Like they say, behind every man is a great woman. Each year, Pink & Green has broadened its reach, expanded its goals, raised more dollars, and provided a whole lot of fun.
This event has had a tremendous impact in the Westerly-Pawcatuck community and beyond over the last decade. To date, Pink & Green has raised over $312,000 to directly support the Ocean Community Y’s YCares scholarship fund, ensuring our promise that no one is ever turned away for the inability to pay.
$312,000 . . . let’s put that into perspective . . . …that sends 780 YOUTH to YMCA Camp Watchaug for a 2 week summer experience that could changes their lives forever. …this level of funding helps the Y meet our promise of Youth Development in so many ways including learn to swim programs, Teen Leaders Club, youth mentoring, school team building partnerships and offering positive role models in our Youth & Teen Center.
